A short guide to choosing the best free email service.

There are countless free e-mail services options today, but which ones are worth using? This article will help guide you on choosing the best free e-mail service on the web by exploring the following options:

  1. Gmail
  2. Outlook
  3. ProtonMail
  4. Yahoo! Mail
  5. Zoho Mail

Gmail

This free service is run by Google and offers a suite of services including Google Drive, Google Documents, Google Calendar, Google Hangouts Meet, and Google Photos. All these services have a combined maximum of 15 GB of storage. While the attachment size limit is 25 MB, larger files can be transferred using Google Drive. Gmail also offers scheduled or snoozed emails and the ability to undo a send after a specified amount of time. In my experience using Gmail, it is great in blocking spam and phishing e-mails. Given the provider, there is unsurprisingly a powerful search feature. Gmail is feature rich and is the best overall choice for a free email service.

Outlook

Microsoft Outlook has been a big name in the enterprise email space for decades. Now they’re bringing enterprise grade email to the public for free. This is great to take advantage of their enterprise security system. They offer a 15 GB inbox and a 34 MB maximum attachment size. They have an integrated calendar with which you can create appointments and meeting invites. It supports email rules where emails can be automatically forwarded to specific folders for better organization. There is also a lot of third-party app integration and great spam filtering. Outlook is fully featured and a great choice for a free email service.

ProtonMail

Brought to you by scientists at MIT and CERN, ProtonMail is a service that focuses on security and privacy. It is based in Switzerland, which protects users with strict privacy laws. ProtonMail’s Zero Access encryption ensures no one, not even ProtonMail, can read your e-mails. E-mails between ProtonMail accounts are end-to-end encrypted and encrypted (and even expiring) e-mails can be sent to users of other e-mail services. The maximum attachment size is 25 MB. Email services come with calendar and Drive services, but capacity is limited to 500 MB. This is the best free email service for those who require strict privacy, security, and confidentiality.

Yahoo! Mail

One of the standout features of Yahoo! Mail is its gargantuan 1 TB storage capacity, though the attachment size limit is still 25 MB. Another unique feature is that it allows you to create hundreds of disposable email addresses so that you can hide your actual email address. It has a highly customizable interface with its own GIF database. It comes with a calendar, and it is easy to integrate and import from Facebook or Outlook. Yahoo! Mail has been around for awhile and has been a long-term reliable choice for a free e-mail service.

Zoho Mail

Zoho Mail is a free ad-free service that includes enterprise grade security. It is designed for small businesses and is free for a maximum of 5 accounts. You can use its Stream feature to collaborate with your team with shared messages and attachments. It comes with an integrated calendar and task and contact lists. Zoho offers a 5 GB capacity and a 25 MB attachment size limit. It comes with a migration tool to seamlessly migrate from G-suite or Office 365. Zoho is not a bad
