DESCRIPTION: By now, you've probably heard about the The Social Dilemma. It's a new documentary on Netflix filled with former tech industry insiders who believe that social media companies like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram opened a Pandora's Box that's unleashing unspeakable evil on society. And what's really to blame for all this? Capitalism, of course. But while the film is full of scary soundbites and melodramatic dramatizations, its mostly a manipulative, one-sided treatment of a complex issue that repeatedly misses the mark by focusing on polemic and hyperbolic catchphrases instead of sound arguments. In the end, it's a deeply flawed film that requires a substantial amount of criticism that's going to take us *two* episodes to unpack. ______________________________ Support Out of Frame on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OutofFrameShow Check out our podcast, Out of Frame: Behind the Scenes: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiS5rEmhnLwo1IG9bgr19Og Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/out-of-frame-behind-the-scenes/id1523047493 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9vdXRvZmZyYW1lcG9kY2FzdC5saWJzeW4uY29tL3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAMQ4aUDahcKEwio0bz_ytbsAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBA Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2pEel2dEsurOGqpXJrXNd3?si=CzJNWaDwT2enEqbqW4DkcQ ______________________________ CREDITS: Produced by Sean W. SPOILERS AHEAD. Wonder Woman 1984 will be hitting theaters (or streaming services) soon. Gal Gadot was fantastic as Diana in 2017’s Wonder Woman, but… she didn’t get her worldview quite right. She had to learn a powerful lesson about how humanity actually works, and it’s time to explain what Wonder Woman got wrong and why it matters to you. It’s tempting to oversimplify both great things and terrible things by assigning responsibility to one important player. Diana was convinced that Ares, the God of War, was the mastermind behind World War I. So, logically, killing Ares meant ending the war. Unfortunately, Diana found out that it just doesn’t work that way. And whether you’re celebrating or blaming Obama, Trump, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden or Jeff Bezos, chances are it’s a lot more complex than that. Understanding that it’s not as straightforward as ‘your guy = good, their guy = evil’ is something Diana had to come to terms with… and she almost got there. We’ll see whether she’s refined her understanding of the world in Wonder Woman 1984, but you can solve this problem *right now* by recognizing that almost nothing is as simple as it seems. ______________________________ CREDITS: Produced by Sean W. We’ve spent a lot of time on this series talking about the effects of coronavirus lockdowns on the economy in general as well as the entertainment industry, specifically. The economic burden has been devastating to many, and it’s impacting other areas of our lives in really negative ways. It’s… not great. Fortunately, there is at least one bright spot in the entertainment industry right now. Hollywood, and the film industry in the US in general, is a mess right now, but the Czech Republic is quietly coming to the rescue of some of our favorite entertainment projects. Like pretty much everywhere else in the world, the Czech Republic shut down filming in March due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, they were able to resume filming in May, unlike the July reopenings in most other filming hot-spots. And how the country is managing it is just as important as the rescue itself. The Czech reopening plan was developed in conjunction with health experts, sure, but also the people and organizations the plan would actually affect. More importantly, the guidelines laid out for the resumption of filming are just that: guidelines. NOT legally-binding regulations. This allows for the flexibility to accommodate the individual needs of each particular project. More importantly, the guidelines expressly state that there are certain things that simply can’t be known during the unfolding of an epidemic, and individuals need to take responsibility for themselves and their projects. In this time of heavy-handed restrictions and over-reliance on the “wisdom” of experts, the intellectual humility and emphasis on personal responsibility in the Czech filming guidelines are both incredibly refreshing and incredibly important. It’s also working. The Czech Republic has drawn some huge projects there due to its pre-existing qualities, but it’s keeping them there and keeping them closer to schedule than other locations have been able to. ______________________________ CREDITS: Produced by Sean W. Aldous Huxley’s 1932 novel Brave New World has finally gotten the TV treatment it deserves. The Peacock original series of the same name clings pretty tightly to Huxley’s original story, and the few modern additions make a lot of sense. Brave New World shows us the fictional, futuristic setting of New London, where the World State cleanly and scientifically runs everything and everyone completely. Babies are not born, but “hatched” in a lab, genetically engineered from “conception” and psychologically conditioned from infancy to be perfectly suited to their caste-specific duty. And while Brave New World routinely gets labeled as a dystopian story, it seems more accurate to say it’s a utopian story that’s just as terrifying as its grittier counterparts like George Orwell’s 1984. New London is clean, technologically advanced, and wealthy. Its residents have access to all the food, consumer goods, entertainment, and Soma they could want. Every conceivable hedonistic desire is indulged. And yet, something insidious lurks beneath the gleaming surface of New London. A centrally-planned and closed-off society like New London operating with the success that it displays is simply not possible in the real world. But such dreams have long been the fantasy of many progressive thinkers over the years, especially in the early 20th century. Philosophers and writers like Huxley, George Bernard Shaw, and Bertrand Russell were convinced that central planning was not only good but necessary for managing the rapidly increasing complexity of the modern world, up to and including eugenics. Huxley, unlike most of his contemporaries, was prescient enough to foresee the profound, negative psychological effects of such a level of state control over people’s entire lives. The latent unhappiness that would definitely exist with such a lack of personal autonomy is the reason for the invention of the fictional drug Soma, which does everything from calming anxiety and easing pain to, in a large enough dose, quietly euthanizing those members of society who have outlived their usefulness. The combination of centralized control, intense psychological conditioning, and psychotropic drugs has created a society of mindless drones in New London. And when the cracks in that society begin to appear, which are then exacerbated by the arrival of John the Savage, we see just how fragile such a society would be. ______________________________ CREDITS: Written & Produced by Sean W. SPOILERS AHEAD! Carnival Row on Amazon Prime might be one of the best shows you’ve probably never seen. The first season has been out for nearly a year, but its themes about identity-group tensions and an out-of-touch political class are more relevant than ever. Given everything that’s happening in America right now—especially as it’s an election year—it should be very clear just how vast the chasm of understanding is between our political leaders and the people who have to live with the results of their decisions. Flavor-of-the-day hot takes and partisan-fueled bickering might make good sound bites, but they fail to accomplish anything meaningful. Worse, they add fuel to the fiery divisiveness of our discourse that dominates our news, our social media, and even our real-life relationships. Carnival Row might be set in steampunk-Victorian fantasy world filled with non-human races and more than a little bit of magic, but the characters that inhabit it are dealing with issues that are remarkably similar to ours. Solving the problems facing both the characters in Carnival Row and us in real life won’t happen by granting the government more power over what is or is not allowed or just electing the “right people” to office. And it certainly isn’t seeing an individual as a member of an identity group instead of as a person. But what is the solution? ______________________________ CREDITS: Produced by Sean W. Support Out of Frame on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OutofFrameShow It’s time to talk about cancel culture -- and whether Robert Downey Jr.’s face in 2008’s Tropic Thunder is a funny element of important satire or an offensive aesthetic that warrants cancellation. Despite what people on both sides of the issue would have you believe, the notion of “cancelation” is actually pretty nuanced. Comedy relies on shocking, offensive, and uncomfortable portrayals of deeply sensitive topics, from religion to sexuality to race. The list of classic (and very funny) comedy movies that could never be made today is depressingly long. But a modern example, barely 12 years old, of a comedy that certainly couldn’t be made today is the brilliant satire Tropic Thunder. Despite the film earning multiple awards, its hilarious send-up of Hollywood pretension and the action movie genre would certainly be condemned as “problematic” if it were released in today’s climate of wokeness. While freedom of speech necessarily comes with the responsibility to bear the consequences of that speech, it’s still important to nurture a society that is tolerant of diversity of thought and opinion. No one should be considered a victim because they’ve been told that something they said was inappropriate or insensitive, but neither should they be silenced by the outrage mob. Speech does not exist in a vacuum. Tone and context matter, regardless of how offensive or blasphemous the words might appear on the surface. And nowhere is this more apparent than in the realm of comedies like Tropic Thunder and within characters like Robert Downey Jr.’s Kirk Lazarus. And it’s not just comedy. Cancel mobs have ravaged college campuses, from incidents involving Bret Weinstein’s at Evergreen State College, Lindsay Shepherd at Wilfrid Laurier University, and Nicholas Christakis at Yale. So I hope you have the courage and curiosity to join me in a challenging discussion on the limits of acceptable speech and expression on this potentially funny, possibly enraging edition of Out of Frame. ______________________________ CREDITS: Written & Produced by Sean W. Check out FEE's newest Out of Frame video, "American Cop Shows Are Brainwashing You": https://youtu.be/V-RKVsqGY9U It's a scary time in America. In the last few weeks, we've seen police violence, protests, riots, snitch lines... all framed by the backdrop of a viral pandemic. It's not hard to see that a lot of people are hurting and angry. It's also not hard to understand why. It's a formula for conflict involving cops, Karens, and the threat of a dismal, uncertain future -- and dystopian fiction has given us prescient previews. With the coronavirus lockdowns and the fear they spread both causing massive economic and emotional damage in this country, Americans have been strained to the breaking point. This country's founding promises of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness have every appearance of being betrayed. Three high-profile incidences of police (or police-adjacent) killings of unresisting people in just the month of May lit the fuse, but the explosion was primed and ready to go well before that. The echoes of dystopia in today's reality are clearly heard. Movies like "V for Vendetta" and the genre of dystopian fiction in general are incredibly important to our way of thinking about and our reaction to the world around us. Here's why. ______________________________ CREDITS: Written & Produced by Sean W. Malone Edited by Arash Ayrom & Sean W. Malone Asst. Check out FEE's newest Out of Frame video, "American Cop Shows Are Brainwashing You": https://youtu.be/V-RKVsqGY9U The economy isn’t a big computer that we can program to work a certain way. It just… doesn’t work like that. Instead, the economy -- locally and globally -- is a network of human relationships so complex that it’s constantly pushing and pulling against itself to respond to our needs and to improve our quality of life. Economics is really about people. In the last few months, we’ve seen that delicate balance utterly destroyed with lockdowns, quarantines, and shuttering businesses. Governments are determining who is “essential” and who isn’t, and sometimes it’s not even clear whose work matters and how important it really is. All we need to get an understanding of this is a quick look at the entertainment industry. We’re seeing new releases delayed or pushed to digital as production grinds to a halt. And the movie theaters? They aren’t just about movies, they’re also about stuff like popcorn. Popcorn comes from farmers who need to plan their crops a year or more in advance. When we shutter a movie theater, the economic effects ripple outward into areas we couldn’t even identify if we tried. And that’s where films like The Big Short come in. Our economy is engulfed in an unprecedented dumpster fire so severe that we needed to make one of our longest Out of Frame episodes ever, leaving a very simple, but near-impossible to answer question: Now what? ______________________________ CREDITS: Written & Produced by Sean W. Check out FEE's newest Out of Frame video, "American Cop Shows Are Brainwashing You": https://youtu.be/V-RKVsqGY9U *** Note: This video was originally meant to be published on April 2nd, but after a month in YouTube purgatory, it's finally available. *** Captain America: Winter Soldier was the first film in the MCU that successfully integrated real-world current events and important policy issues into its plot. It hit on critical issues like warrantless surveillance, drone warfare, due process, and other fallout from the USA PATRIOT Act. Fear pushes people to accept policies that they would never accept under less stressful conditions, and it opens the door for unscrupulous leaders to take control over people's lives. In 2001, the fear of terrorism drove the United States to institute a never-ending global War on Terror that radically expanded state power in defiance of individual rights. These themes couldn't be more relevant today. In the midst of a terrifying viral pandemic spreading across the world, politicians are quickly grabbing power, shutting down entire economies and standing in the way of individuals making choices that could play a major role in finding much-needed solutions to the growing health crisis. These policies may seem like they are protecting people from bigger dangers, but we could soon be stuck with a cure that's far worse than the disease... just as we were 20 years ago. _____________________________ CREDITS: Written & Produced by Sean W. Check out FEE's newest Out of Frame video, "American Cop Shows Are Brainwashing You": https://youtu.be/V-RKVsqGY9U From new movie releases like JoJo Rabbit to modern classics like Blazing Saddles, The Producers, and Team America: World Police -- and, of course, centuries-old landmark works such as Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” -- satire has helped us examine real social and political topics using humor that’s often absurd… and sometimes offensive. Satire and its cousins like irony allow us to grapple with some of our most dangerous, difficult ideas, and the audio-visual medium of film gives ample opportunity to explore complex, and often uncomfortable, themes. Films like JoJo Rabbit, in which a young German boy has an imaginary friend in the form of a murderous dictator, can employ stinging jokes, ridiculous plots, and farcical characters that address serious issues. It is, in a word, speech -- and the freedom of speech that allows for satirical novels and boundary-pushing movies is critical to our using creativity to advance the social and political dialogue that improves our world. And yes, many times that speech can be offensive. It can be inappropriate. It can upset us. But its importance is why we're going to get into the complex and hotly debated subject of freedom of speech… on this episode of Out of Frame. _____________________________ CREDITS: Written & Produced by Sean W. In this episode of Out of Frame, we present a detailed history of streaming services while explaining the role of the entrepreneur in society, the importance of price signals, and why monopolies don't last very long without legal protection. ______________________________ CREDITS: Written & Produced by Sean W. China is a make or break market for Hollywood movies, and a major player in film financing. But the audiences and money come with strings attached. China's Communist Party picks and chooses what its people are able to watch, and what's deemed acceptable ranges from laughable to enraging. In this episode of Out of Frame, we look at how China influences our entertainment and how we can fight back. ______________________________ CREDITS: Produced by Sean W. Malone Written by Sean W.
