2020 was an ugly year and so far, 2021 doesn’t look any prettier. With mass lockdowns still enacted, businesses failing by the hundreds of thousands, rising suicides and drug overdoses, and a pandemic that still has yet to subside, things may seem bleak. Surprisingly, the 1984 comedy classic “Ghostbusters” can teach us a lot about the situation we’re stuck in and how we can get out of it. Hint: More government is not the answer. Support Out of Frame! As we enter peak holiday season, most people have their shopping done by now, but as always, many are scrambling last-minute for their purchases. And if you aren’t one of those early-birds fortunate enough to procure a PS5 or Xbox Series X, you can guarantee that you won’t be able to find one unless you’re willing to pay $1,200 to a scalper. Many are understandably frustrated. How is it fair for people to buy up the consoles at $500 and sell for nearly double or triple the cost? “There ought to be a law” against that kind of thing—right? Well, in short, there’s nothing wrong with scalping—and a few economic lessons will help explain why. Scarcity is real and so is time-preference. Scalpers (and even bots) show that demand for some goods is so high that people are willing to pay several times the list price—which could provide a lot of information to Sony and Microsoft on how many consoles to produce and in what parts of the world. They could factor that information into the future, so there would be less problems with availability, but most retailers make this information exchange impossible. Nowhere is this more perfectly expressed than the recent HBO Max movie, ‘The Witches.’ In the film, a dark fantasy comedy based on a Roald Dahl novel, Anne Hathaway plays a witch with claw-hands and a few missing fingers. A few angry tweeters were angered that Hathaway’s character bears some resemblance to people with split-hand syndrome (yes, really). Here’s the kicker, that film would have gotten very little attention if it weren’t for the “controversial” Hathaway hands. It’s unbearably boring, the characters are terrible, and the effects are garbage. By being outraged at something minute like this, we’re giving media and filmmakers undeserved attention. But this isn’t to say we shouldn’t be sensitive or seek to correct historically racist and grotesque depictions of minorities and underrepresented backgrounds, like Mickey Rooney’s Japanese landlord character in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s.’ It is only to say that we shouldn’t be upset at actors playing characters with different backgrounds in an artistic way, which is what acting is all about! Marketers will only respond to what’s working, and if we continue to be perpetually aggrieved at the slightest things, we’ll be creating a system and incentive structure that might make the problem worse. Sometimes the best (and easiest) thing to do is to change the channel or not consume something we dislike. Instead of being outraged, we should simply choose not to take the bait. ______________________________ CREDITS: Produced by Sean W. Malone Written by Jen Maffessanti & Sean W. As fans of Out of Frame may already know, Hollywood isn’t really the biggest advocate of free-market capitalism (“It’s just business!”). But this sentiment isn’t limited to hardline dramas like ‘Wall Street’ or ‘The Godfather’—it’s also prevalent in MANY horror movies, such as John Carpenter’s 80s sci-fi horror flick, ‘They Live.’ (MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD) In the movie, we’re presented with a drifter who slowly realizes the world around him is a false reality. As it turns out, there’s a class of aliens who have infiltrated society as bankers, politicians, rulers, and wealthy socialites. Through their scheming to get rich and control the world, they’ve turned ordinary folk into a horde of mindless consumers who do nothing but obey the commands they’re given. (Obey! Consume! Conform! Submit!) The connection is made explicitly clear toward the end of the movie as one alien admits, “It’s business! That’s all it is!” Yet again, the free market is scapegoated as what’s wrong with the world. But what the movie misses—as do many others—is that the problems of the world aren’t caused by a single person, a single group, or a single force—they’re caused by us. That is, each individual has agency and personal responsibility for the outcomes they experience in life. Rather than project blame unto the other, the world is made better by those who decide that it’s up to them. Are there any movies you can think of that get this right? Let us know in the comments. Brutality. Protests. Riots. #DefundThePolice. #NotAllCops. “If you don’t break the law, you don’t need to fear the police.” Regardless of what you think about what’s happening now in cities across the entire country, I want to talk about the perceptions people have of law enforcement and how the most popular genre in television shapes the way we think about criminal justice. Love them or hate them, the police procedural has shaped the perspective the general public holds of the police for generations. And probably not for the betterment of society. Let’s talk about why. ______________________________ CREDITS: Produced by Sean W. Malone Written by Jen Maffessanti & Sean W. Malone Edited by Paul Nelson Asst. But not everyone is happy with the positive results of Universal's premium VOD experiment. After hearing that Universal is seriously considering continuing to offer VOD rentals in addition to theatrical releases once film exhibitors open back up, movie theater giant AMC declared it wouldn't play ANY Universal films if that happens. It's no secret that fewer and fewer people have been going to the movies in recent years, and film exhibitors were struggling even before COVID-19 and the policy responses to it shut down vast swathes of the economy. But will the success of this innocuous animated musical really be the straw that breaks the camel's back? ______________________________ CREDITS: Produced by Sean W.
