That's not the only features on offer. It also has multipoint connection, 32GB of on board storage, Bluetooth 6.0, EQ presets, rear safety LEDs, a lightweight titanium frame, plus everything else you would expect from an upmarket headset. You can even swim in it. So what are bone conduction headphones? Unlike normal headphones, which use tiny speakers inside or on top of the ear canal, bone conduction headsets press against the side of the head close to the ears with the sound transmitted directly through the bones of the head. This sounds a bit weird, but it works perfectly well with the advantage that you are fully aware of the environment around you and will hear the truck that is bearing down on you. Inside the rather upmarket branded product box were the headset together with a short charging cable, a Silicone band, a USB-A to USB-C plug adapter, a carry bag and a well written and nicely printed user guide. Build quality all seems high end and of premium quality. The headset band is the smallest and lightest that I have come across, made from plastic over a super flexible titanium core. It fits around the head with the buds resting on the side of the face in front of the upper part of each ear, not over it. Unlike conventional headsets, there are no speaker grills or ports as sound is transmitted directly through the plastic casing of the headset. There are proper clicky buttons on the right headband pod with combined buttons for Volume Up/Power and Volume Down/LED lights. The left hand speaker pod houses the multifunction button, which is tapped to control track advancement, Bluetooth/MP3 mode selection and call handling. Long press the MF button to switch between calls and to invoke the voice assistant. When in Bluetooth mode, the MF button is used to select Vocal/Bass/ Balanced EQ settings and in MP3 mode to control track and folder selection. I was surprised that there is no smartphone app for the headset, which would make fine tuning the settings and file handling much easier. There being no charging case, the headset is charged directly through the magnetic pogo pin port on the right headband pod. Charging the 140 mAh battery takes about two and a half hours and will give you eight hours of music time. Long press the Vol+/Power button to turn the headset on and off, and it will automatically power down after a few minutes without a connection. Take note that this is a custom cable and there is no way of charging the headset without it, so be careful not to lose it. This headset uses the latest version of Bluetooth, version 6, which makes for easier pairing and gives improved range, sound quality and freedom from dropouts. I should add that the user guide says it has version 5.4, but the Lypertek website confirms it is Bluetooth v6.0. When pairing, look for: LYPERTEK S30. To pair two phones simultaneously, just pair to the first phone and then turn off Bluetooth on that phone, then pair to the second phone and once connected, turn the first phone back on, and it will automatically pair in tandem with the second. One selling point of the headset is the onboard storage of 32GB, enough for about 8000 songs. To switch from Bluetooth to MP3 mode, press the MF button 4 times, and a prompt will confirm the mode selected. To move files to the headset, connect it to your computer or smartphone using the pogo pin charging cable, making use of the supplied USB-A to USB-C adapter if required. The headset should then appear as a mounted volume on your device to which files can be added or deleted, as with any other connected storage device. Another novel features are the two safety LEDs on the rear of the headset. In normal light, they are rather dim, but outside at night, they are surprisingly effective. To turn on or off, long press the volume down button. The most important feature of any headset has to be the sound quality. I have to say that this headset does not disappoint and has given me some of the best audio quality I have yet experienced from a bone conduction headset. When in Bass mode, there is plenty of low end, a mid range that is both clear and well defined, and a high end that is neither too sharp nor sibilant. However, positioning on the head is very important both to get the best bass and audio quality and to avoid unpleasant vibration to the skin. I found call quality to be excellent, with clear and well defined speech clearly audible at a decent volume at both ends. Bone conduction headsets are not for everyone, and the large number of features on offer here and their control can be confusing and intimidating at first.
