Season 3
All the episodes of the 3rd season of the podcast. General theme: data literacy
A lot has been said and written about APIs over the years. Somehow, there is still a veil of mystery surrounding this topic. As it inevitably involves data, it’s linked to analytics and privacy in some ways. Since I don’t know much about this topic (even if I’ve written about it on my blog), I decided to interview Stephanie Reid-Noe, who is far more knowledgeable. So, in this episode, I ask her about how API integration works, the data involved in APIs, how analytics can get something useful out of it, the business side of APIs, how privacy is factored in, and how all this relates to data literacy. Even if you are not that technical, this is an episode you are bound to enjoy, at the very least because of Stephanie’s entertaining style and engaging way of explaining the topic.
Many people have heard about business strategy and how it is essential. Fewer people are familiar with data strategy though and how it’s equally essential for any data initiative. I have to admit, before the Spring of 2022, I wasn’t that knowledgeable on this subject. So, I decided to learn about it in a methodical and in-depth way. After some research, I identified a few solid courses and enrolled in one of them. I also got a book on this topic, which I read during this learning phase. I won’t ask you to do the same, but I can share with you some of the key things I learned. After all, data strategy is a framework of sorts that can put all these matters in perspective and help us deal with them in a just and efficient manner. This episode is ideal for business people as well as analytics and privacy professionals who want to learn more about the business side of these fields. PS - The course and the book are both by a talented data strategist called Bernard Marr. If anyone of you knows him, perhaps you can persuade him to come to this podcast for an interview! If that’s too much to ask, maybe you can persuade him to use this episode as an intro to the subject, a conversation starter of sorts, something that he may wish to promote in his network. Business people and data professionals seem to be speaking two different languages (perhaps even more!). This results in a gap between the two worlds, making collaboration challenging. Fortunately, people like Ammarah Ahmed act as an interpreter between the two camps, making communication and collaboration possible. In this episode, we explore the various aspects of this gap and how data literacy plays a crucial role in bridging that gap. This is a non-technical episode, ideal for anyone involved in business, leadership, and data work. Mentoring has been a topic that I’ve written extensively about, for the past years. Still, it doesn’t seem to go dry, at least in my mind. The reason is simple: I’ve been witnessing the effect of professional mentoring in analytics students over the past five years, plus I’ve been on the receiving end of good mentoring too. The fact that there are whole companies these days built around (professional) mentoring attests to its value-add and to its necessity. Complementing conventional educational channels, mentoring is personal and hands-on, while at the same time able to provide a sense of perspective to the mentee/learner. In this episode, we’ll explore the key aspects of this endeavor that helps forge the data literacy mindset in tomorrow’s data professionals and data managers. Sustainability is a hot topic these days but what does it mean exactly? Clearly, it goes beyond the environmental aspects and it’s something that concerns many businesses today. Naturally, data and being literate about it have a role to play in all this and affects both our perception of sustainability and the businesses involved. Svetlana Suvorona is knowledgeable about all this as she has built a business around this idea, to bring about awareness and encourage collaboration among industry experts in this field (ESGentle.com). This is a longer episode than most but it’s definitely worth your time. You don’t have to have visited Egypt, Mexico, or any one of the numerous sites around the world that feature pyramids. As long as you are interested in this beautiful shape and how it models data and information, you are good to go! “What’s that?” you say? Well, it’s a neat classification of the various levels of information, starting from data and going all the way to wisdom, with everything else in between. Many people wiser than me have written and talked about this pyramid, but few ever talk about how privacy fits in this paradigm. That is, until now... So, grab your Indiana Jones costume, and let’s go explore the data pyramid! After some in-depth searching for some common ground between privacy, analytics, and other data-related topics, it became clear to me that data literacy may hold the key. But let’s see what Daniel Angermann has to say for this and other interesting topics related to this. A seasoned data professional and great mentor, Daniel is happy to share his empirical knowledge on the subject along with plenty of suggestions as to how we can go about educating ourselves more on this matter. Regardless of whether you are a business person, a data pro, an information worker, or anyone else who has an interest in data and what it can do for you, this episode is a must. So, just give it a listen when you have a moment and share it with everyone else you know. Daniel and his message on data literacy definitely deserve it!
