This episode we are painting the car! Finally!! After a couple weeks of work and about a year's delay we are painting our first generation Datsun Fairlady Z (s30 - 240z / 260z / 280z). Given one of us doesn't have a lot of money (...and is frugal anyway) we try to do a 2-stage paint job (primer, base, clear) as cheaply as possible. Have I ever mentioned I really dislike bodywork? Today on the $300 Painting Adventure we are doing a lot of metalwork on the Nissan 280Z body. There wasn't a lot of bad rust to patch but it was concentrated enough to merit some new metal on this 48 year old car. Lower quarter repairs, fender repairs, rocker panel, driver door patching... Personal injury, there was a lot of work needing doing. With a nearly useless welder from Princess Auto (not a sponsor), this meant grinding for literally days on end. And so began.... In Chapter 9 we do a stripping montage, and we know you want to see us take it all off (The paint). Watch as we try several methods of paint removal, in hopes of preserving the body's sheet metal. We try sanding, wire wheel, heat guns, a torch, and paint stripper. We even have to remove some unnecessary body filler (AKA: Bondo). Don't waste time with trial and error, we make some tips throughout that should help you save time. There are a couple time lapse clips as well. Two ways to pull a windshield out of a Nissan S30 Fairlady Z. This is effectively the same for the 240Z, 260z, 280z. Probably the 280ZX as well. If you can't remove windshield seal because it's old, cut it. In chapter six we strip out the interior panels in the trunk (hatch, boot). Then we pull the antennae, speakers, and rear side-marker lamps. There is a lot of stuff tucked in there so chances are you'll need to pull the panels at some point. It's an easy and straightforward job. Well... almost. Removing the bumpers, easy. But to remove the grille you must first take off the turn-signal covers. BUT, to take off the indicator cover plates you need to loosen the grille. One step closer to starting our low budget paint job, but it is still a ways to go. How do you remove the trim on a Datsun S30? (240Z, 260Z, 280Z, Nissan Fairlady Z) Before we can test the cheapest paint job, we need to remove the trim. This video covers the drip rails, the upper and lower side trim, the rear quarter Z badges, and drilling ALOT of rivets.
